About Opalton
Opalton is an outback rural locality in the Shire of Winton, Queensland, known for the Opalton Opal Field, one of the largest and most extensively worked opal deposits in Queensland and the state's most active boulder opal field. Opal was discovered there in 1887 by a station stockman, the first mine was worked from 1894, and the field was named Opalton by the postal department in 1895. By the turn of the century more than 600 people were working the field, which remains a popular fossicking area today.
