About Flying Fish Point
Flying Fish Point is a coastal town and headland on the northern shore of the Johnstone River mouth where it meets the Coral Sea, about eight kilometres north-east of Innisfail. Named by explorer George Dalrymple in 1873 after his cutter Flying Fish, the area was originally called Musgrave before being officially renamed in 1961. Thomas Henry Fitzgerald planted sugarcane there in 1880 but the focus shifted upriver to what became Innisfail, and Flying Fish Point developed as a popular holiday town instead.
