About Beswick Creek
Beswick Creek is a large rural locality in the Roper Gulf Region of the Northern Territory, about 80 kilometres south-east of Katherine on the Central Arnhem Road. The locality contains the Aboriginal community now known as Barunga, which began as the Beswick Creek settlement, established in 1951 after the nearby Maranboy tin mine wound down, with many of the mine's Indigenous workers settling beside the creek. The community was renamed Bamyili in 1965 and Barunga in 1984; it now hosts the annual Barunga Festival and was the site of the Barunga Statement presented to Prime Minister Bob Hawke in 1988.
