About Putney

Putney is a suburb on the northern bank of the Parramatta River in the City of Ryde, approximately 11 kilometres northwest of the Sydney CBD. Originally known as Eastern Farms and later Kissing Point, it was among the earliest British settlements in New South Wales. Named after Putney on the River Thames in London, the foreshore of the "Thames of the Antipodes" hosted world championship sculling races from the 1880s to the 1930s. The Putney Punt, the last surviving vehicular ferry in the Sydney metropolitan area, is a notable local feature.
