About Werrington

Werrington is a suburb of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia, located 49.3 kilometres west of the Sydney central business district within the City of Penrith local government area. The area was home to the Gomerrigal-Tongarra people prior to European settlement. The first land grant was made in 1806 to Mary King, daughter of Governor Philip Gidley King; she and her husband Robert Lethbridge later built a homestead named Werrington, which still stands on Rugby Street and is heritage-listed. NSW Premier Henry Parkes leased the property from 1860 to 1872 and arranged construction of a nearby private railway platform, opened to the public in 1878 as Parkes Platform and renamed Werrington in 1893. The railway station became the nucleus around which the suburb grew, with the estate subdivided from the 1880s. Notable features include the heritage-listed Rose Cottage and Early Slab Hut on Water Street, Werrington Lakes, and campuses of Western Sydney University. The suburb is served by the Main Western railway line, the Great Western Highway, and the M4 Motorway.
