About Ballina
Ballina is a town in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, Australia, and the seat of the Ballina Shire local government area. It lies 740 km (460 mi) north of Sydney and 185 km (115 mi) south of Brisbane, at the mouth of the Richmond River. Settled from the 1830s, Ballina grew as a port and remains a commercial fishing centre, known for the Big Prawn, a nine-metre roadside sculpture built in 1989 and restored in 2013. The Ballina Naval and Maritime Museum displays one of the Las Balsas rafts, which reached Australia in 1973.
