About West Wallsend
West Wallsend is a suburb and small town in the City of Lake Macquarie, Greater Newcastle, New South Wales, located 21 kilometres west of Newcastle on the traditional land of the Awabakal people. The suburb has its origins in coal mining, with the West Wallsend Colliery formed in 1885 operating until 1923 after extracting over five million tons of coal. A private railway connected the colliery to the government Main North railway at Cockle Creek from 1888 until 1938. One mine still operates in the area. The suburb is home to West Wallsend Primary School, opened in 1889, and West Wallsend High School, opened in 1962.
