About Hillsborough (Lake Macquarie - NSW)
Hillsborough is a suburb of the City of Lake Macquarie in the Hunter Region of New South Wales, located about 13 kilometres from Newcastle's central business district on the eastern side of Lake Macquarie. A coal mining venture began in 1874 but the coal proved inferior and the town was abandoned, remaining a ghost town until redevelopment after World War II. Hillsborough Public School opened in 1963 and the suburb forms part of the City of Lake Macquarie north ward.
