About Georgetown (NSW)
Georgetown is a residential suburb of Newcastle in the City of Newcastle, New South Wales, located 6 kilometres west-northwest of the Newcastle central business district. Named after George Moate who acquired land in the area in 1853 and subdivided it into an estate, the suburb began as a residential area for workers from nearby industries including the Copper Smelting Works and Goninans, now UGL Rail. By 1880 Georgetown was already described as a prosperous village. The suburb is bordered by Waratah to the north, Islington to the south, Broadmeadow to the southwest and Hamilton North to the southeast.
