About Matheson
Matheson is a small rural locality west of Glen Innes on the New England Tablelands of New South Wales, an area of elevated cool-climate pastoral country. The district, part of the early Waterloo run taken up around 1839, includes Balaclava Station, selected in 1866 and long known for breeding ponies and later Aberdeen Angus cattle. Carved kangaroo-track engravings on a rock near the Gwydir Highway are an Aboriginal heritage site in the area.
