About Tinonee
Tinonee is a small town on the banks of the Manning River near Taree, on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales. Founded in 1854, it was named from the Biripi word for 'big shark' or 'place of sharks'. Tinonee was once a major port and commercial hub on the Manning, with a wharf where timber was loaded onto tall ships, shipbuilding and broom-making industries, and the first newspaper on the river was published here. Growth declined after the railway reached Taree in 1913 and the Martin Bridge bypassed the town's punt crossing in 1940. It is now home to the Terrace Cinema Museum, a 22-seat theatre recognised by Guinness World Records as the smallest in Australia.
