About Taree
Taree is a town on the Manning River in the Mid North Coast region of New South Wales, about 317 km north of Sydney. Its name comes from the Biripi Aboriginal word "tareebit", meaning the sandpaper fig tree beside the river. The town was laid out in 1854 on land settled in 1831 by William Wynter, and became the district's main centre after the railway arrived in 1913 and the Martin Bridge replaced the river ferry in 1940.
