About Russell Vale

Russell Vale is a small suburb of Wollongong in the City of Wollongong, New South Wales, located 7.2 kilometres from the Wollongong central business district. Named after the Russell Vale estate of surveyor Francis Peter MacCabe who died in 1897, the name Russell was the maiden name of his mother Margaret nee Russell. The original estate was 250 acres with 116 lots sold in April 1904 and 96 more in November 1904. The house Russell Vale was demolished in 1966. Russell Vale Golf Course opened in 1986 and Cawley Park is the home ground of the Russell Vale Soccer Club. Russell Vale Colliery is an underground coal mine under the Woronora Plateau operating since the 1880s. The Princes Highway runs through the suburb.
