About Mount Warrigal

Mount Warrigal is a residential suburb of Shellharbour in the Illawarra region of New South Wales, situated approximately 100 kilometres south of Sydney. The name derives from an Aboriginal word for dingo, reflecting the suburb's original designation as "Native Dog Hill," a prominent 76-metre elevation overlooking Lake Illawarra. The land was part of a grant to Thomas Davey in 1821 and was subsequently farmed by the Gorrell family before residential development began in the post-World War II period. The suburb was gazetted in 1969 and is bounded by Lake Illawarra to the north and west, with elevated terrain providing views of the Pacific Ocean to the east and the Illawarra Escarpment to the west and north. Blackbutt Reserve lies to the south.
