About Singleton (NSW)
Singleton is a town on the banks of the Hunter River in New South Wales, about 202 kilometres north-north-west of Sydney and 70 kilometres north-west of Newcastle, on the traditional land of the Wonnarua people. Established in the 1820s and early on called Patrick's Plains, it retains historic buildings including a courthouse from 1841, and was badly flooded in 1955 when an embankment was built to protect the town. Coal mining is the largest local employer, alongside electricity generation, vineyards, horse breeding and cattle, and the town is close to the Pokolbin wine region.
