About Murrurundi
Murrurundi is a rural town in the Upper Hunter Shire of New South Wales, almost completely surrounded by mountains of the Liverpool Range and lying on the Pages River. The name comes from an Aboriginal word meaning 'five fingers', a reference to a rock formation at the northern end of the township. Established as a government town in 1840 and merged with the neighbouring private township of Haydonton in 1913, Murrurundi grew as a service centre for the district, with kerosene shale mined nearby from 1886 and a railway station opened in 1872 on the Main North line.
