About Warren
Warren is a town on the Macquarie River in the Orana region of New South Wales, located off the Mitchell Highway 120 kilometres north-west of Dubbo and the seat of Warren Shire. Explorer John Oxley camped near the townsite in 1818 and Charles Sturt carried out further exploration in 1828-29, with cattle grazing in the area by the late 1830s. It became a railhead in 1898, and its prosperity has risen and fallen with wool and, later, cotton. The town is a base for river fishing and canoeing, with the Tiger Bay Wetlands to the north attracting a wide range of birdlife.
