About Maclean
Maclean is a town on the Clarence River in the Northern Rivers of New South Wales, near the Pacific Highway and below Mount Maclean, where the river flows around Woodford Island. Known as the Scottish Town in Australia, it was laid out in 1862 and named after Surveyor-General Alexander Grant McLean, and its Caledonian character is celebrated by the annual Easter Highland Gathering and more than 200 power poles painted in family tartans. Sugar cane farming and the river's fishing underpin the local economy.
