About Wyalong
Wyalong is a town in the northern Riverina of New South Wales, a few kilometres east of its larger sister town West Wyalong, and the site of the 1893 gold rush that opened the district. The rush drew more than 12,000 miners at its 1894 peak, and the field had produced more gold than any other in the colony by 1899, with 447,500 ounces won before the last mine closed in 1920. The name comes from the Wiradjuri word Waaylang, meaning hard-shelled nut, after the quandong.
