About Orange
Orange is a city on the western edge of the Central Tablelands of New South Wales, about 254 km west of Sydney at an altitude of around 862 metres. Surveyor-General Thomas Mitchell named the district in honour of Prince William of Orange, and the town grew with gold discoveries at nearby Ophir in the 1850s. The city is a centre of cool-climate food and wine, and the base of Mount Canobolas, an extinct volcano rising to 1,397 metres, the highest point in the Central Tablelands. Orange was the birthplace of poets Banjo Paterson and Kenneth Slessor.
