About Molong
Molong is a historic town in the Cabonne Shire of the Central West region of New South Wales, located 296 kilometres west of Sydney and 36 kilometres north-west of Orange. Established in 1849, the name derives from an Aboriginal word meaning all rocks. Copper was discovered at Copper Hill in 1845, making Molong a historically significant copper mining town. Heritage-listed sites include the Molong railway station and the Grave of Yuranigh. The Historical Museum is housed in a former 1856 hotel built by rubble-mason James Mortal. Molong Central School and St Joseph's Catholic Schools serve the community.
