About Grenfell
Grenfell is a historic gold rush town in the Weddin Shire of the Central West region of New South Wales, located 367 kilometres west of Sydney. Gold was discovered in 1866 by shepherd Cornelius O'Brien and the town was proclaimed on 1 January 1867, named after Gold Commissioner John Granville Grenfell who was killed by bushrangers. Between 1867 and 1869, over 1,100 kilograms of gold were produced annually, making it the richest goldfield in New South Wales at the time. The poet Henry Lawson was born here. Attractions include the Chrysler Car Museum, Iandra Castle, Ben Halls Cave, the Weddin Mountains National Park and silo art by Heesco Khosnaran completed in 2019.
