About Tomakin
Tomakin is a small seaside village on the south coast of New South Wales between Batemans Bay and Moruya, at the mouth of the Tomaga River. Its name descends from the Aboriginal river name Tommaghan, recorded in 1828, and was changed from Tomago to Tomakin in 1880 to avoid confusion with the town of Tomago near Newcastle. The village grew around sawmills and shipbuilding as a busy coastal port, and today Tomakin Cove is a protected sandy cove popular with swimmers, kayakers and snorkellers.
