About Merimbula
Merimbula is a town on the Sapphire Coast of far south-eastern New South Wales, around the lagoon known as Merimbula Lake. Its name comes from a Yuin Aboriginal word meaning two lakes, after the town's twin lagoons. Merimbula was laid out in 1855 by the Twofold Bay Pastoral Association as a shipping point for wool and livestock from the Monaro, and a deep-water wharf was added in 1902. Sydney Rock oyster farming began in earnest after World War I and remains a major industry, alongside the tourism the town's beaches and whale-watching attract.
