About Bemboka
Bemboka is a town on the Snowy Mountains Highway in the Bega Valley Shire of New South Wales, about 474 km south of Sydney, in the country of the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. The name, originally Benbooka, is thought to mean 'high peak'. The town grew around the dairying district at the head of the Bega Valley, which supported six butter and cheese factories in the late 1890s, and sits at the foot of Brown Mountain, close to the South East Forests National Park. The Bemboka Pie Shop, built in 1930, still serves travellers coming down from the Monaro.
