About Holtze
Holtze is a rural locality in the Municipality of Litchfield, Darwin, Northern Territory, located 22.4 kilometres southeast of the Darwin central business district. Named after Maurice William Holtze, a German-born botanist who established Darwin's Botanical Gardens in 1878, Holtze experimented with tropical plants including rubber, rice, peanuts, tobacco, sugar and coffee. He later became Director of the Adelaide Botanic Garden from 1891 to 1917. Robertson Barracks, a major Australian Army base, and the Palmerston Regional Hospital opened in 2018 are located in the locality. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people made up 44.4 percent of the population at the 2016 census when the locality had a population of 1,810. The locality is in the territory electorate of Nelson and the federal Division of Lingiari.
